Mar Mac Lodge is a unique wilderness lodge is located on Esnagi Lake in Ontario’s Algoma Country.  You can arrive here by float plane via White River Air or by train in White River. For this adventure, we took a plane in and trained out. Each cabin is very spacious and beautifully designed. Ours had all the amenities needed for a great stay: hot shower, high ceilings, oil heater for cold nights, comfortable beds, full kitchen, and dining room. Even a BBQ grill on the deck, but with the American Plan, all meals are provided. Bring your appetite!

Walleye and northern are the main targets here. With plenty of eater “shore lunch” walleyes to be caught, and a good chance at one in the 27-30″ class. Northern pike can be found in some of the cabbage flats that pepper the lake. Find the cabbage, find the pike! And what better to catch them, than in a big cedar strip boat! These ole “boats” are very stable and have been in use here for decades. There’s plenty of room for three people and gear.

Mar Mac Lodge does provide live bait, but you can have just as much success with artificial lures. The big Walleye at the top of this blog was caught on a Rapala Jigging Rap. I marked the fish on my sonar in about 25′ of water (Portable Humminbird Helix 5) and threw it back on it. A couple of snaps and it bit!

The sandy current points in 6′ down to 30′ are perfect for this presentation. The biggest walleye we caught were on a Rapala Jigging Rap and Rippin’ Rap. These are great options for smooth rock areas and sand breaks. We caught them in the middle of the day, flat-calm, snap jigging those two presentations. My biggest walleye of the trip was the Jigging Rap. You won’t get the numbers compared to live bait, but the AVERAGE bite will be BIGGER (there are some BIG walleye in Esnagi)!

Of course, a SHORE LUNCH was mandatory! We met up with another group staying there for some delicious fresh-caught walleye!

With most lodges, you get a nice 14-18’ aluminum boat. Here, you cruise around and fish in style on custom-hand-built 18’ cedar strip boats. These are very stable and easily fit three anglers with floor storage space for all your gear.

Mar Mac Lodge offers great accommodations with the comforts of home…far away from home. Getting there and back is simple, you can either enjoy a train ride or floatplane on a Dehavilland Beaver or Turbine Otter. The airbase and train station are both located in White River. You have options. For more information visit:  Mar Mac Lodge
